North Perth renovation project

Heritage Design

This 1960s North Perth renovation project stands as a testament to the art of blending heritage charm with contemporary elegance. Partnering with the visionary Sharon Wiley from Seven Willow Designs, the approach was meticulous: preserving historical features while infusing modern sophistication.

Celebrating Heritage Through Architecture

The renovation retained and highlighted the home’s most compelling features, with exposed brickwork, period cornices, and original fireplaces offering a tactile connection to its storied past. By meticulously restoring these elements, we created a foundation that bridges the charm of the 1960s with modern sophistication.

Architectural Cohesion and Contrast

John Kestel’s approach shines in the interplay between old and new. Structural interventions were designed to respect the home’s existing framework while creating dynamic transitions between spaces. Black steel-framed windows and textured masonry bring a sense of permanence, contrasting beautifully with softer design features like timber paneling and contemporary furnishings.

The interiors were treated as an extension of the architectural narrative, balancing functionality with artistic intent. Carefully sourced finishes, from handcrafted tiles to bespoke joinery, create visual rhythm and movement throughout the home. Highlights include:

  • Layered Materiality: Exposed brick portals divide key spaces, offering depth and architectural hierarchy.
  • Natural Flow: Sliding glass doors blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a sense of openness.
  • Integrated Greenery: Skylights and planter recesses infuse the interior with natural light and verdant accents, softening the geometry and adding life to every corner.

The design honours the individuality of its occupants through thoughtful customisation. Each room tells a story, with restored antique furniture sitting comfortably alongside modern pieces, all thoughtfully curated to reflect the client’s vision. Collaborations with local craftsmen ensured that every detail—from upholstery to lighting—enhanced the home’s architectural integrity.

This renovation is more than a transformation; it is an architectural dialogue between past and present. Every decision, from preserving the textured masonry to introducing clean contemporary lines, underscores John Kestel’s ethos: timeless design that resonates with both history and innovation.
